RALEIGH, NC. (Oct. 18, 2023) – Florida National University’s women’s soccer team continues to wait for its first win of the 2023 season after falling 2-0 versus Shaw University. The Conquistadors lost by the same score the previous afternoon to the University of Mount Olive and now stand at 0-6-2.
Despite the final scoreline, Florida National showed some life on offense by putting up six shots in the contest, two of which came off the foot of goalie Nahomie Ambroise. The Conquistador defense also kept the Bears off the board as both teams headed for halftime 0-0. The Bears launched 11 shot attempts while FNU’s Enma Amaya and Ambroise combined for three shots in the first.
In the second half, an unassisted goal from Giovanna Coghetto gave the Bears a 1-0 lead. FNU forward and former CAC Player of the Week, Johanna Andersson tried to make things even with a shot that sailed just wide of the mark about four minutes later. Another Shaw goal in the 71st minute essentially closed out the match. Matilde Strocchi headed in the score on an assist from Lorena Gonzalez. Great shots from Valentina Salvatierra Calero and Claudia Rivero in the final 20 minutes of the contest never materialized into much-needed goals.
The Bears recorded 29 shots to FNu’s seven, and Shaw won the corner kick race 5-2. Ambroise had another busy afternoon in the box, picking up 12 saves and facing 14 shots on goal.
Up Next: FNU heads to Boca Raton, Fla., for a 6 p.m. contest versus Lynn University on Oct. 21.
