What Military Educational Benefits are Available?
Military educational benefits are available for active-duty, veterans, and their dependents. Some of the benefits Florida National University offers include:
Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® helps military veterans with the cost of school. This includes University tuition and fees, a housing allowance, and a stipend for books and supplies.
Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty (Chapter 30)
The Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty offers educational benefits for up to 36 months. They can be used for degree and certificate programs. Veterans must be:
● Honorably discharged
● Obtained a high school diploma or GED
● Meet specific requirements
Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)
A military benefits program that provides educational benefits to members of the Selected Reserve. Reserve members can use benefits for tuition assistance, correspondence courses, and national tests.
Dependents Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)
Educational benefits for the survivors and dependents of military veterans who are disabled or died while on active duty. This benefit offers military dependents funds for degree programs, including tuition and other educational fees.
Post-Vietnam Era Educational Assistance Program VEAP (Chapter 32)
A government-match program for veteran educational benefits that extends benefits to active-duty personnel and veterans who enlisted in the military between January 1, 1977, and June 30, 1985.
How Long Do You Have to be in the Military to Get Education Benefits?
Each military educational benefit has different requirements. They are as follows:
Post-9/11 GI Bill® Eligibility
If any of these are true, you may be eligible for benefits through the Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33):
▪ You served on active duty for at least 90 days on or after September 10, 2001, whether continuous (all at once) or interrupted (for shorter periods over time), or
▪ You served for at least 30 continuous days on or after September 10, 2001, and were discharged because of a service-connected disability, or
▪ You received a Purple Heart on or after September 10, 2001
▪ You are a dependent child using benefits transferred by a qualifying Veteran or active-duty service member
Note: If you are a member of the Military Reserves who lost your education benefits when the Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) ended in November 2015, you may qualify to receive restored benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Montgomery GI® Bill Eligibility
Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD)
If you served at least 2 years on active duty and meet the following requirements, you may be eligible for benefits through MGIB-AD.
All of these must be true:
▪ You were honorably discharged, and
▪ You have a high school diploma, GED, or 12 hours of college credit, and
▪ You didn’t decline enrollment in MGIB-AD when you started active duty, and
▪ You meet any additional eligibility requirements
Check all the requirements for MGIB-AD
Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)
If you are a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard Reserves, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, and you meet the minimum requirements, you may be able to get benefits through MGIB-SR.
One of these must be true:
▪ You have a 6-year service obligation (you agreed to serve 6 years) in the Selected Reserve, or
▪ You’re an officer in the Selected Reserve who agreed to serve 6 years in addition to your initial service obligation
And all of these must be true:
▪ You complete your initial active duty for training (IADT), and
▪ You get a high school diploma or certificate of equal value, like a High School Equivalency Diploma or GED, before finishing IADT and
▪ You stay in good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit
