Students in class According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the summer solstice that began June 20 at 6:34 p.m., is officially underway but for students, it may have begun a little earlier than that. That might have been the moment the spring semester concluded!

The summer season can be looked at as an allotted time off from academic studies. You have the opportunity to take a break from the intense demands of college deadlines and enjoy a couple of months of relaxation. While you’re perfectly entitled to do this, you might also want to consider enrolling in some summer courses the next time the summer season approaches.

Check Your Calendars and Plan Ahead

Most high school graduates might think as soon as the official summer season has begun, they now have the option of enrolling in summer college courses. This isn’t entirely true because the college enrollment deadline requires you to start the enrollment process well before the summer term starts. A college academic calendar is a little different from the K-12 scholastic calendar. This is something high school graduates should take into serious consideration when planning their summer curriculum.

While you should never feel guilty about taking the summer off, it is important that you know all of your options as a college student. Every summer semester you take to expedite your college career is one step closer toward graduation.

While Florida National University’s (FNU) second summer term is already underway, it’s not too late to consider planning for summer fall studies next year. Sometimes, it can be as simple as preparing your mind in order to enroll for next year’s summer courses. So, if you’re a college student who’s considering enrolling in summer classes, be sure to check your academic calendar so that you can better plan for the next enrollment.

The Advantage of Taking Summer College Courses

Enrolling in summer courses is not the determining factor of whether or not your college career will be a success or failure. However, you can definitely accelerate your college career by taking some summer courses. And FNU would be remiss if we didn’t relay that information to you.

If you have the chance to finish your college studies earlier than expected, it’s certainly recommended to look into these opportunities. Sometimes, an early graduation can result in getting the job of your dreams, because while a polished resume, appearance, and other attributes come into play when being considered for a job, timing can also be everything! A job opening today may not be available tomorrow. That is not to say there won’t be any job opportunities for you in the future either. You’ll simply have a better chance of graduating early by taking summer courses, and with that may come certain opportunities that might not otherwise be available.

Here is a list of a few ways you can prepare to take summer classes and still have an enjoyable summer for the following school year:

Organize Your Classes

Consult with your program director to assist you in determining how many courses you have left to take each semester. While summer courses tend to be a little less crowded sometimes, you might want to consider enrolling in a class that you suspect could be more challenging for you. Taking a smaller class can sometimes give you a better advantage by allowing you to ask your instructor more questions for a more thorough understanding of the assignments.

Plan a Break. There Still Room for Vacationing!

Just because you plan to take summer courses doesn’t mean that you’re not allowed to take a vacation. FNU has an academic calendar that is accessible at all times on our website. There, you can determine when semesters begin and end to schedule a mini vacation. The academic calendar usually posts the semester dates from the winter semester to the fall semester. While the summer 2017 semester isn’t visible yet, it’s recommended to check often for updates, especially when the fall semester ends.

Consider Your Credits

Most of FNU’s academic courses are worth 3 credit hours. Depending on what kind of program you’re enrolled in, you may have some 4-credit hour courses. This is also something to take into consideration when you’re planning to enroll in summer courses. That extra credit hour usually means an extra hour of studying!

FNU’s second summer term has already begun. Get organized. Plan your courses accordingly while keeping in mind other priorities. Be sure to take your credit hours into consideration as well, because that can sometimes make all the difference in how soon you meet your graduation requirements.

Other Times to Enroll at FNU

Whether you want to hear this or not, fall will be here before you know it, and as a college student, you’ll have to start thinking about enrolling into to courses before they fill up. If you took a couple of summer courses, you will have already earned at least 3-6 more credits for the year. For those who have chosen to take the summer off, those 3-6 credits will have to be earned in the upcoming fall semester.
