HIALEAH, Fla. (Nov. 2, 2023) – Florida National’s women’s soccer team will finish this season winless after falling 4-0 in its season finale against the Edward Waters University Tigers. The Conquistadors end 2023 with a record of 0-9-2 and the Tigers bounced back from a 7-1 loss to Barry University on Halloween.

Before the action started at Milander Park, seniors Hucely Hernandez, Mickaela Crespo Calisto, Valentina Salvatierra, and Lauren Rodriguez were recognized for their commitment to the FNU soccer program. Flowers and framed jerseys filled the field at Ted Hendricks Stadium and once the ceremony wrapped, it was all business for the Conquistadors.

The Tigers got off to a solid start and scored their first goal of the afternoon after FNU goalie Andrea Oropeza committed a foul in the penalty area. EWU’s Claudia Mate confidently converted the penalty just 11:53 minutes into the opening half. FNU was held to just one shot in the half from Enma Amaya which sailed wide. The Tigers put up a  staggering 19 shots before both teams headed to the benches for halftime.

In the second, EWU had an unprecedented offensive burst with three goals in 10 minutes. Libby Brown got things rolling with a go-ahead goal assisted by Sophia Paffrath. Dahien Cabrera scored the next two goals for the Tigers, one on a corner kick from Mate and another assisted by Katharina Weigl.

FNU had more attempts towards the net in the second, with Amaya picking up a shot that was carried over the crossbar and Johanna Andersson got off two quick shots to no avail at the end of the half.

The Tigers led the way with 32 shots to FNU’s four in the contest. Oropeza notched nine saves in the loss.
