AVE MARIA, Fla. ( Sept. 14, 2022) – Florida National University women’s soccer team fell short of a victory against the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University, Tuesday. under the pouring rain, FNU faced a red-hot Ave Maria team that just won its first game of the season, against Florida College 5-0. With this 2-0 loss, the Conquistadors fall to 0-4-0 on the season while the Gyrenes improve to 2-2-3.

FNU started the contest looking to build on Mickaela Calisto’s late-game magic against Brewton-Parker on September 10, as Delmis Reyes Amaya had a shot on goal in the early minutes that wound up in the waiting hands of goalkeeper Libby Brooks to knock it out of play.

The Gyrenes scored their first goal of the contest 32 minutes into the half, as Liz Wolf headed in a tough goal that bounced off FNU goalkeeper Vanessa Osorio. The home team took this lead into the break and lead the way with nine shots to FNU’s four. Vanessa Osorio tallied six saves in the first 45.

Following a lengthy weather delay keeping both teams off the pitch to start the second half, FNU saw a perfect goal-scoring opportunity as Dominique Mosley found Calisto streaking down center field. Unfortunately, the Gyrenes goalie collected the ball comfortably between her gloves before FNU could capitalize.

In the 65-minute, Wolf found the back of the net once again to make it 2-0, and solidify her team’s victory. Ave Maria had 14 shots on goal in the second half while FNU put up eight of their own. FNU led the way with 10 saves.
