Few people need convincing when it comes to studying in South Florida. The state is ranked as one of the top places where people vacation so it is no wonder that one might consider pursing an education in Florida. South Florida appeals to many college students and here’s why:
Great Weather All Year
One of the reasons Florida has become one of the number one vacation states is because of its nice weather. It never snows and is rarely cold. Not only is the weather beautiful, but it is also tropical.
Florida is uniquely situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. That paired with the rainy season that spans from May to October, creates a humid atmosphere creating lush and picturesque vegetation unique to the state.
What makes the state of Florida so unique? For travelers and new students, they can experience Caribbean-like weather without having to travel overseas. Students won’t have to worry about seasonal changes as the tropic weather is consistent offering weather averaging about 70°F in the winter and up to 95°F in the summer. However, the humidity will make it feel a bit warmer than the actual temperature.
Reduce Potential Depression
Did you know that studies show people can become depressed based on their seasonal environment? A disorder known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a diagnosis for someone whose mood is affected due to seasonal changes. According to the Mayo Clinic, SAD symptoms start around the fall season as it notes the end of beautiful summer weather and the beginning of cold and snowy temperatures.
Symptoms for SAD include:
- Low energy
- Loss of interest in activities
- Insomnia
- Weight loss or gain
- Lethargy
- Having difficulty concentrating
All of the symptoms listed above can have a negative impact on a student’s academic performance and experience. This does not mean that everyone who doesn’t live in a warm climate like Florida will have SAD. Like most disorders, it is a diagnosis that only affects some people.
Studies Show…
A research study conducted at the University of Michigan, located in the Midwest of the United States which experiences significant seasonal changes, found that “for weather to improve mood, subjects needed to spend at least 30 minutes outside in warm, sunny weather.” Studying in Florida, one can experience more than 30 minutes by simply commuting to and from classes!
The study goes on to suggest that pleasant weather is beneficial for “improving mood, memory and broadening cognitive [skills].” This conclusion was reportedly found from a set of three studies that involved 600 volunteers throughout the United States who were randomly elected to spend time outside during periods of nice weather.
Great Weekend Get-a-Ways
