Late-Inning Rallies Hand FNU a Pair of Losses on Friday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (March 19, 2021) – The No. 12-ranked St. Thomas Bobcats (17-9) used late-inning rallies to down the Florida National Conquistadors (5-16) in a pair of games on Friday evening.

Marking the first two contests of a four-game set with the Bobcats, Friday’s doubleheader began with a 6-4 loss for the Conquistadors in Game One.

Holding a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, FNU could not overcome six unanswered runs in the final innings to suffer the two-run loss. STU scored two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to claim the victory.

FNU was led by Jasiel Perez, who went 3-for-4 from the dish with one run driven in. Christopher Mendez scored two runs for FNU, going 1-for-2, including a walk and a stolen base versus the Bobcats.

In Game Two, FNU’s pitching staff held the nationally-ranked Bobcats scoreless through six innings before a three-run bottom of the sixth resulted in a 3-2 loss for the Conquistadors.

Starter Thomas Hernandez held STU off the scoreboard in two innings of action, striking out two while allowing just four hits. Zjeanuwayne Baafhart (0-1) was credited with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in three and one-third innings of action while striking out five.

Carlos Cartaya accounted for both of the FNU runs, driving in two while hitting 2-for-3 with a double in the contest.

The Conquistadors will return to the field to close out the weekend series with STU on Saturday, March 20. First pitch of the Saturday doubleheader
