HIALEAH, Fla. (July 15, 2024) – Florida National University named Robert Overby its next men’s and women’s track and field head coach on July 15. The former USA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships qualifier brings over 20 years of experience to Hialeah, Fla.

The 2024 season for FNU saw the Conquistadors send its first female athlete to the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship (Joelle Baptiste) and claimed its first Sun Conference title in the triple jump (Ivan Rodriguez). Overby looks to build on this success in 2025 while also helping out as an assistant coach for the cross country team this fall.

Overby’s coaching philosophy centers around developing a clear understanding of the needs and desires of his athletes. With the capacity to see the big picture, he focuses on coaching the athlete’s needs rather than a one-plan-fits-most training model, emphasizing effort, developing individual skills, team skills and life lessons that promote overall success.

Before taking over the helm at Florida National, Coach Overby was an assistant coach at Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Fla. His primary responsibilities were coaching the short and long sprints and relays. Overby also held multiple track and field head coaching positions at various high schools in South Florida.

Overby earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies with a specialization in literature and humanities from Barry University and holds a USATF Level 1 coaching certificate.
