Once again, Florida National University will offer the Seminar for the 2013 VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) in conjunction with the IRS (Internal Revenue System). This program will take place at Hialeah Campus (Florida National University) during January 11th, 18th, 25th and February 1st and 2nd. By becoming a VITA volunteer, you have the opportunity to cause a change in your community. This volunteer experience will give you the skills that last a lifetime and may stand out on resumes, scholarship and job applications!
In conjunction with partnering organizations, The Internal Revenue Service sponsors this program, which is designed to help low-to-moderate income individuals (up to $50, 000) prepare and electronically file their federal income tax returns. Tax preparation assistance is provided free of charge at convenient locations, including churches, non-profit organizations, colleges, universities, libraries and senior citizen’s centers, etc.
The VITA program provides free training materials to our volunteers. This training method is a web-based program providing ten modules (three required and seven optional):

  • Ethics, Basic, Intermediate (required)
  • Advanced, Military, International,Puerto Rico, Foreign Student and two specialty courses on Cancellation of Debt and Health Savings Accounts (optional if not required by the partner).

This training prepares volunteers to provide quality tax return preparation services in their local communities. Students will make their way through lessons that include tax topics, case studies, and interview simulations. This fun, interactive course teaches the basics to accurately prepare income tax returns for individuals, and users can obtain volunteer certification along the way at their own pace! Each module has a test. You need to score 80%, and you only get two attempts.
Please contact us if you have any questions about the VITA program. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail me your name, address, phone number, days and hours willing to volunteer, and attach your online certification. You will be contacted via e-mail with further information closer to the filing season.
