Softball Closes Out Regular Season with Sweep of Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. (May 1, 2021) – The Florida National softball team (24-13) closed out the 2021 regular season with a sweep of Ave Maria (20-22) with a 7-5 (10 innings) win in Game One, and downing the Gyrenes, 7-0, in Game Two.

In Game One, FNU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-RBI single down the right-field line by Natasha Trujillo. The native of Whittier, California, hit 1-for-3 versus the Gyrenes with three RBI in the contest. The right-handed also picked up the victory in the circle, tossing all 10 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out six.

Gabriela De Oliveira led the Conquistadors with three hits in Game One, going 3-for-5. Also registering multiple-hits in the contest were Nini Underwood (2-for-4), Gabryella Hay (2-for-5), and Megen Johnson (2-for-4).

FNU held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seven but the Gyrenes plated a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. The teams exchanged runs through the next two innings until the top of the 10th when the Conquistadors added three runs en route to the 7-5 win.

In Game Two, Hay tossed a complete game shutout of AMU, allowing just three hits in a 7-0 victory.

The Conquistadors scored five runs in the first two innings. RBIs by Brandi Kirkpatrick and Baileigh Ehrlich in the first and a two-RBI single by Gabriela De Oliveira in the second coupled with an RBI-single by Trujillo gave FNU a 5-0 lead.

The Conquistadors added two runs in the top of the seventh to cap off the scoring, 7-0.
