What is cybersecurity, why is cybersecurity so important and how do you detect when you’re being attacked by cyber-criminals? A business owner needs the help of cybersecurity experts to protect the personal data of customers against criminals. Understanding the precise classification of a cyber-attack can also be useful to the organization’s incident response team or even law enforcement.

What is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the process of protecting and recovering computer systems, devices, networks, and programs from any type of cyber-attack. Today, these cyber-attacks have become extremely sophisticated and dangerous to sensitive data. As the world becomes more dependent on technology, attackers employ new methods powered by social engineering and artificial intelligence to bypass traditional security.

Why is Cybersecurity Important?

Our society is more technologically inclined and dependent than ever before. Although it may seem convenient to have all your personal data, including credit cards, social security number, birthday and address, accessible with a tap, it makes identity theft easier than ever. All of this information is now stored in cloud storage like Dropbox, iCloud and Google Drive.

All businesses, large or small, rely on computer systems every day. When you visit a store and use your credit card to purchase something, this data is stored. When you sign up to receive discounts, your name, phone number, email and sometimes even your address are stored in their system. Pairing this with the rise of cloud services, poor cloud service security and smartphones, we have a countless amount of cybersecurity threats that didn’t exist a few decades ago.

Benefits of Cybersecurity

The benefits of utilizing cybersecurity include:

  • Protection for data and networks
  • Prevention of unauthorized users
  • Protection for end-users
  • Business protection against malware, phishing, social engineering and ransomware
  • Improved confidence in products for both customers and developers

Knowledge of Cybersecurity

Understanding cybersecurity enables an individual to update the systems of a company. An IT expert can protect a business from the income loss that can result from a hacking attack. These experts have a heavy responsibility to ensure data security and to protect it against viruses.
